Three generations influenced by GOGA in Fife

GOGA in Fife has worked hard to promote GOGA key principles of family engagement, inclusive active recreation and volunteering. Three generations of the Adam’s family from Dunfermline demonstrate how GOGA in Fife has influenced their lives since Disability Sport Fife was offered the opportunity to be part of the UK wide programme.

Three generations involved in GOGA

When GOGA in Fife was in its embryonic stages in 2016, Cameron Adam was an enthusiastic young Primary pupil with an interest in physical activity. This interest was encouraged by his Primary school and family. Thanks to GOGA investment in Fife, with support from Spirit of 2012, Cameron has benefitted from attending a Disability Sport Fife weekly run, jump and throws session at Pitreavie Athletics Centre supported by GOGA in Fife and Fife Sports and Leisure Trust. Over the past year in addition to attending the run, jump and throws session, Cameron has joined Fife Athletic Club and with additional support and guidance from his new coach, Steve Doig, he is making excellent progress as a sprinter and shot putter.

Mum Claire was inspired by Cameron’s progress and signed up through Fife Council Education Services for a Disability Inclusion Training course organised by Disability Sport Fife and Scottish Disability Sport. Attendance at this course inspired Claire to sign up as a volunteer with Disability Sport Fife and support the GOGA in Fife programme. Not surprisingly Claire was welcomed enthusiastically and now contributes significantly to the weekly run, jump and throws session.

Disability Sport Fife lead session coach Pamela Robson, has been encouraging the family members and significant others who support the youngsters with physical and sensory impairments who attend the session to be active during the time when the youngsters are receiving coaching. Walk and talk was introduced to replace sit and chat and so successful has this initiative been that Cameron’s Gran is now fully committed to a parallel active recreation programme. She proudly told me on the telephone about her weight loss and feel good factor.

Three generations of the Adam's family have now been influenced by GOGA in Fife programme messages and resources. All three members of the family are registered with GOGA in Fife in different capacities. Cameron as the youngest member of the family has been the inspiration to his mum and Gran.
